What is Plastic Surgery?
Whether you were referred to us by another doctor or you located us on your own, you may wonder about the scope of our services and how a plastic surgeon could help with your condition. Patients often ask, “What is plastic surgery?”
The word “plastic” means that something is moldable, that it can be shaped. With this concept in mind, plastic surgeons undertake procedures to reestablish form or function lost to a person for any number of reasons. At times, we do use synthetic materials and bioengineered tissue. More often, a plastic surgeon utilizes specialized knowledge and skills to repair or rearrange things for the patient’s benefit. Thus, there is a blend of purposes in mind as we strive to keep you looking your best while restoring and improving function.
The specialty of plastic surgery grew out of the desire to help those affected by war, disease, and birth defects. Today, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the preeminent organization for the continued development of plastic surgery in the United States. Members of this society, including Dr. McKee, are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
